Okay, so I compeletely wussed out on doing a review last week. A), because I am going all Hamlet up in this piece with the life-related indecision. And B) because last week's backdoor pilot sucked ass, pretty much. But my show is back, so here be my weird unrelated thoughts.

Now THAT was a proper CM episode. All little interesting threads in the first half, weaving into a coherent second half. With a satisfying, if really depressing, ending. ("Yes, it sucks. But it would have sucked more if we hadn't come." "OK, let's go home.") Very Pratchettskew.

That was a silly little bit about the budget in the cold open; do we think that's an Arrested Development style "bites the hand that feeds them" slap at CM's Red Headed Stepchild treatment from the network?

Some seemed to have pegged Deputy Boyd as the unsub right off, just from his evilosity. I might have pegged him too; except that his first line was "Hey all y'all" or something , and I got sucked into a linguistic discussion with my mother. I.E. "All Y'all"- the English "Vous", and all that.
(And Mike Doyle then PROCEEDED TO PLAY A GOOD GUY and the Witness of The Week on In Plain Sight. Which made my head explode.)

And then there is The Hotch (that Comcast typo being the only good thing to come out of last week.) He's quintessential Hotch, but the cracks are still visible. When the drug lord was going into lurid detail about his SOP of revenge?  Hotch is still so very very good at his job, and he got the job done. But you could feel the drums beating louder at that one. The beast writhing in its chains, because this is not the guy (if he ever was) to be able to shake off a lurid description like that. (Esp. involving family.)

AAAGH. I adored Sheriff Ruiz more in 15 minutes than I did Edgy New Guys in 45 minutes last week. And they really drove the knife in with her last scene, to the point that I was saying "Oh fuck no" at the screen. I'm glad that she at least got to call the unsub a "punk-ass [bitch]" before she died. She did have some great chemistry with Hotch.

Emily en Espanol! But: Oh, that poor mother.

Can anyone transcribe the Hotch/Rossi conversation in the SUV? From context, I know it had something to do with the MP5s decibel level, and blowing out Emily's eardrum. But I'd like some confirmation, especially if they're remembering Hotch's poor beknighted ears. (Love angry Emily.)

Yet again, more suicide by cop. Plus family trauma. Those seem to be the interwoven themes of this season. Maybe because the lines between the BAU and the family are getting blurrier.  I saw "A Real Rain" again last night, and this reminded me of the hole in that profile. The fact that it might be a cop. The fact that the the 5% of people you don't want holding guns overlapped with the 1% of cops you don't want holding guns. Power and insecurity and firearms.*shudders*
